Farmer Urges Federal Government To Declare State of Emergency on Agriculture

A Nasarawa farmer, Mr Simeon Odis, has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on agriculture. Odis emphasised that it is imperative for the government and the people of Nasarawa State to prioritise agriculture, as it holds the key to sustaining the country in the coming years.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Sun on Monday, Odis underscored the need for a shift in attention towards agriculture, urging young people to explore farming as a viable opportunity. He highlighted that even without land, young individuals can commence small-scale farming activities in their own backyards.

“The space typically reserved for flowers in your compound could be utilised to cultivate crops such as pepper, tomatoes, and other cash crops,” Odis proposed.

He further elaborated that these backyard farming initiatives could serve as a starting point for young farmers, enabling them to gain experience and contribute to the agricultural sector’s growth.

Recognising the significance of agriculture, Odis asserted that it holds immense potential for the country’s future, particularly with concerns about the sustainability of fuel. He stressed that Nigeria needs to look inwards and harness its agricultural resources to ensure food security and economic stability.

Drawing from his expertise and experience as an agriculturist, Simeon Odis, a renowned agriculturist and owner of a ranch in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State Capital urged the federal government to prioritise the sector by implementing policies that would encourage investment and development.

He also called for increased support for farmers, including access to finance, modern farming techniques, and necessary infrastructure.

Odis’s appeal comes at a critical time when Nigeria, like many other countries, is grappling with the need to enhance food production and reduce reliance on imports.
