National President of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr. Mufutau Abolarinwa, has emphasized that agriculture remains the antidote to the insecurity, unemployment, and underdevelopment plaguing the country. Speaking in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on the sidelines of the 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association, Abolarinwa highlighted the critical role agriculture plays in national development and the dire consequences of neglecting this vital sector.
Abolarinwa expressed concern over the perceived attitudes of various levels of government towards the development of agriculture, which he believes has led to significant hardship and economic stagnation in the country. He pointed out that despite the wealth generated from the oil boom, Nigeria has experienced continuous instability and socioeconomic challenges. “Since the days of the oil boom, Nigeria has known no peace. The place of agriculture in the life of Nigeria is similar to the function of the heart in the body. You will agree with me that the oil has brought more doom, notwithstanding the seemingly grandiose structures that dot the entire Nigerian landscape,” he stated.
He further elaborated that agriculture is essential for addressing the challenges of underdevelopment, unemployment, and numerous social vices in the country. According to Abolarinwa, the neglect of agriculture in favor of oil revenue has resulted in missed opportunities for sustainable development and economic diversification. “What is obvious is that agriculture would remain our answer to the challenges of underdevelopment, unemployment, and the numerous social vices in the country,” he said.
Abolarinwa urged the government at all levels, especially the federal government, to prioritize agriculture by providing more agricultural inputs and cocoa seedlings to farmers. He emphasized that revamping cocoa production could significantly contribute to economic growth and stability. “We need a renewed focus on agriculture, and I call on the government to support farmers with the necessary resources to enhance cocoa production and other agricultural activities,” he concluded.
The CAN President’s remarks underscore the urgent need for a strategic shift towards agriculture to harness its full potential for national development. By investing in agriculture, Nigeria can create jobs, ensure food security, and reduce dependence on oil, ultimately paving the way for a more stable and prosperous future.
