Turn to Farming for Better Livelihoods, Experts Urge Nigerians Amid Economic Crisis

As economic challenges and a food crisis weigh heavily on Nigerians, experts are urging the public to redirect their energy towards agriculture to boost incomes and enhance food security.

In a recent statement, farmers and experts alike voiced frustration over the rising cost of food despite ample supply. They pointed out that these high prices fail to reflect the more than N1.25 trillion allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security over the last three years. Many also cited the ongoing devaluation of the naira, which has driven food prices even higher, as a critical factor impacting affordability.

Timothy Ayodele, an agricultural entrepreneur, spoke with Sunday PUNCH about the potential of agriculture to address these issues. “Whether it’s a small garden, a local farming initiative, or learning sustainable practices, agriculture can bring self-sufficiency and financial stability,” Ayodele said. He believes that by embracing farming, Nigerians could help shift the country’s economic tide.

“Investing in Local Farming Boosts Economic Resilience”

According to Ayodele, investing in local farming and community-supported agriculture can do more than just feed families—it can create jobs and strengthen the economy as a whole. “We can’t only rely on the government. Nigerians need to start exploring agriculture at every level,” he added. He further encouraged the Federal Government to foster economic recovery by empowering young people and investing in critical agricultural infrastructure.

Abidemi Ogunkanmi, former Deputy Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly, echoed this call, especially urging Nigerian youth to consider farming as a viable solution. Speaking at the Students’ Parliamentary Summit, organized by the Federation of Ayedire Students’ Union, Ogunkanmi described farming as a sustainable way to soften the impact of current economic hardships.

“With food prices soaring, it’s essential for everyone to consider agriculture. Starting a farm—even a small one—could be the surest way to help restore Nigeria’s economy,” he remarked.
