Rwanda and Nigeria Forge Stronger Economic Ties with New Trade Agreement

The Rwanda High Commission in Nigeria has announced a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and Rwanda’s Private Sector Federation (PSF), signed during the 2024 Lagos International Trade Fair. This partnership aims to boost trade, investment, and collaboration between Nigeria and Rwanda, creating promising opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Specific sectors targeted for collaboration include agriculture, with a focus on Rwandan coffee and tea, as well as energy, manufacturing, technology, and creative industries. Maureen Chukwura, head of Communications at the Rwanda Embassy in Nigeria, highlighted that the MoU offers a structured framework for cooperation in areas such as trade facilitation, investment promotion, information exchange, capacity building, and organizing joint events.

Under this MoU, LCCI and PSF Rwanda will work together to streamline trade procedures, reduce market barriers, and promote the seamless exchange of goods and services. Both organizations are committed to identifying and promoting investment opportunities, sharing insights on market trends, and enhancing business competitiveness in Nigeria and Rwanda.

“This MoU embodies our shared vision for an interconnected African business landscape, with Rwanda and Nigeria leading as models of economic collaboration and mutual growth,” said Christophe Bazivamo, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. “The Rwandan government is dedicated to this partnership, with policies in place to simplify business processes, enhance infrastructure, and foster an investor-friendly environment.”

LCCI representative Gabriel Idahosa emphasized the objectives of the partnership, including strengthening business relations, identifying investment opportunities, and exchanging best practices to bolster Nigerian and Rwandan businesses. This agreement is anticipated to drive economic growth, increase trade flows, create jobs, and enhance competitiveness in both nations.
