Agricultural Expert Urges Nigerian Youths to Embrace Farming as a Path to Prosperity

Kaduna-based agricultural expert and entrepreneur Sadik Falalu has urged Nigerian youths to seize the abundant opportunities in agriculture as a pathway to combat hunger and poverty across the country.

Falalu made this appeal at the 2nd Annual Distributors and Suppliers Conference of Falgates Rice, held in Kaduna over the weekend. Speaking on the theme “Empowering Our Youths in Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges,” he emphasized that despite Nigeria’s vast arable land, many young people view farming as outdated or only suitable for the less fortunate. “Many young Nigerians aspire to white-collar jobs, overlooking the wealth of opportunities in agriculture,” he noted, adding that a shift in mindset could open doors to substantial rewards in farming.

Falalu’s message was clear: “There are countless opportunities in farming if only our youths would see and embrace them.” With the rising cost of living making three square meals a challenge for many households, he urged young people to consider farming as a viable career option.

Addressing challenges in the sector, retired Air Commodore Illiyasu Yahaya remarked that while many view funding as a barrier to farming, a lack of skills often proves a greater obstacle. “Interest and knowledge are essential,” Yahaya said. “Start small, learn the necessary skills, and build from there.”

Another expert underscored the connection between food security and national security, stressing that countries like the United States heavily subsidize their farmers to ensure stable food supplies. “Currently, despite efforts in agriculture, Nigeria spends around $6.5 billion annually on food imports. With a population of around 210 million, this figure could double in the next seven years if we don’t act,” he warned.

To address this growing concern, he emphasized the importance of channeling Nigeria’s vibrant youth population toward agricultural endeavors. “Many young people are beginning to show interest in agriculture, and with the right support, they can play a critical role in transforming our food security landscape.”
